Celebrating DeMilo Young: A Leader Empowering Our Youth

In the heart of San Diego, a remarkable leader is making waves in the nonprofit sector, inspiring youth and empowering communities. DeMilo Young, the dedicated CEO of the BIPOC Support Foundation, has been nominated for recognition by a grateful member of our community. Known for her unwavering commitment to youth development, mentorship, and organizational growth, DeMilo has already made a significant impact in the lives of many.

DeMilo’s journey began in a humble setting. As a latchkey child, she fondly remembers a safe haven on University Avenue, where local youth could gather after school. With access to creative outlets like art and woodshop, this vibrant community center became a nurturing ground that shaped her aspirations. Her experiences fostered a lifelong commitment to ensure every child has a supportive place to grow, which ultimately led her to establish the BIPOC Support Foundation in 2020.

Under DeMilo’s strategic leadership, the foundation has secured over $930,000 in funding to expand programs that uplift underserved communities, focusing particularly on youth. These programs not only provide educational resources but also incorporate elements like behavioral health tools and personal development. Their initiative, “Explore Next Door,” is a standout after-school program that engages students from low-income districts with hands-on multicultural experiences, ensuring they thrive both academically and personally.

DeMilo’s dedication to the arts shines through her past leadership of various dance companies. She believes that creative expression is crucial for youth development and has spearheaded numerous initiatives that directly connect the arts to education. As she currently pursues a Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership & Management at the University of San Diego, DeMilo exemplifies lifelong learning and personal growth.

Beyond her organizational achievements, DeMilo is a passionate activist for social and racial justice. The tragic passing of Tamir Rice ignited a fire within her to advocate for marginalized communities. In response, she organized a worldwide march to honor Tamir and build awareness around injustice. Her relentless pursuit of equity extends to mentoring young leaders in our community, showcasing the transformative power of informed and compassionate leadership.

But what sets DeMilo apart? She possesses a unique blend of skills from over two decades of running successful businesses, such as SoCal Green Screen and Mr. Disc Jockey. This experience equips her with invaluable business acumen that she seamlessly integrates into her nonprofit efforts. DeMilo’s innovative strategies not only promote sustainability for the BIPOC Support Foundation but also forge connections that uplift the broader San Diego community.

As young individuals, whether in high school or middle school, we can draw inspiration from DeMilo Young’s journey. Her story teaches us the importance of community, creativity, and determination. In her words, “The challenges we encounter are merely chapters in our origin story.” Embracing our challenges and aspiring to better our communities, just as DeMilo has done, is a powerful lesson for us all.

Join us in celebrating DeMilo Young, a beacon of hope and change in our community! Her work at the BIPOC Support Foundation not only enriches the lives of countless youth but also reinforces the belief that through unity and support, we can conquer any obstacle.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
