Champion of Change: Celebrating Davon Copeland

In the heart of our community, few figures shine brighter than Davon Copeland. A dedicated educator and entrepreneur, Davon has dedicated his life to empowering others and knocking down barriers to success. With a passion for education and a commitment to fostering partnerships, he not only influences the business landscape but also enriches the lives of young people around him.

As the driving force behind Thereal-Institute.com and CodeWiz San Diego, Davon has become a pivotal figure in the education industry. His businesses are not just ventures; they are platforms designed to help students gain crucial tech skills in an increasingly digital world. Davon’s vision extends beyond mere entrepreneurship; he sees himself as a strategic partner in the educational and communal landscapes. “I aim to dismantle barriers,” he says, “to help others gain access and attain their goals.”

His unwavering commitment to advocacy is driven by the deep values he holds today—finding ways for individuals to break through challenges to achieve success. Davon believes that every student should have the opportunity to thrive, and his efforts manifest not only in his businesses but also in his role as a loving parent, guardian, and spouse, where his family remains at the forefront of all he does.

Beyond the classroom and the boardroom, Davon passionately contributes to the community by coaching youth wrestling. This role has allowed him to connect with young athletes, instilling them with valuable life lessons that extend well beyond the mat. “Wrestling teaches discipline, resilience, and teamwork,” he remarks, underscoring the importance of these skills in all areas of life.

Davon’s feats in business are remarkable—over two decades in the industry and impacting over a million lives is no small achievement. However, he acknowledges that there is still much work to be done. He wishes to expand his real estate holdings and seeks partnerships that can further solidify his impact within our local black community. “Our greatest strengths are our drive, intellect, and focus,” he asserts. Still, he believes that partnerships and access to opportunities need more development in order for our community to flourish fully.

To the youth reading this, Davon wants you to know that success is not only possible but also attainable. He believes in the power of your voice and the potential for change within you. As he continues to invest his time and resources back into the community, Davon hopes to inspire a new generation to rise and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.

So, let’s celebrate Davon Copeland—a beacon of inspiration, a champion of education, and a devoted community leader. With each barrier he breaks down and each life he touches, he paves the way for a brighter future for us all.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
