Celebrating Cynthia Williams: The Healing Artist of Oceanside

In the heart of Oceanside, a unique treasure lies waiting to be discovered by artists, veterans, and anyone seeking solace in creation. Behind this artistic haven stands a remarkable woman, Cynthia Williams, who has dedicated her life to harnessing the healing power of art. Nominated by an anonymous community member, Cynthia is recognized not just for her artistic talent but for her profound commitment to her community. Cynthia’s journey began long before she became an advocate for therapeutic art. With 20 years of experience as a registered nurse and a prior role as a U.S. Navy Medic, she has acquired a deep understanding of mental and emotional wellness. “I believe in the healing power of art and creativity,” Cynthia shares passionately. “We are creative beings by nature, and deep within, we seek to bring something into existence. Creating art feels good to the soul and is a natural desire within us.” This belief fuels her mission to create spaces where art can flourish and serve as a balm for those in need. Her venture, “Cynthia’s Artistic Expression,” a family-owned gallery and studio, reflects her passion and determination. Alongside her husband, W.B., a fellow Gulf War Navy veteran, they have built a sanctuary that specializes in therapeutic art healing for veterans and active duty service members. “Art is a way to express yourself, release stress, and increase mental and emotional health,” Cynthia states. This mission resonates particularly with youth, who often grapple with finding their voice and managing stress. The couple’s story is a beautiful testament to love and creativity; the name of their studio emanates from W.B.’s desire to share the beauty he experienced while serving, particularly with Cynthia. “W.B. always wanted to share the beauty of everything he saw with me,” Cynthia explains, her eyes reflecting a shared journey of inspiration. “That’s how our name, ‘Cynthia’s Artistic Expression,’ came about.” It’s a reminder that art can bridge distances, heal wounds, and capture shared moments. Beyond providing a space for fine art and custom sip and paint parties, Cynthia’s Artistic Expression serves as a workshop for the soul. Cynthia has seen firsthand the transformative effects of engaging with art, especially among veterans and community members who may be battling invisible wounds. “I have personally watched and experienced the positive changes that art can bring,” she notes, illustrating how creativity can foster healing. This powerful testimony illustrates how creativity is not merely recreational but vital for mental health, especially for the pressures young people face today. For middle and high school students in Oceanside, Cynthia’s work serves as an invitation to explore their own creativity while also embracing the therapeutic benefits of art. She’s determined to cultivate an environment where young people feel encouraged to express themselves and discover the potential within their creativity. So, if you’re seeking refuge from daily stressors or a creative outlet to express your feelings, head over to Cynthia’s Artistic Expression. You might just find the healing magic that art can provide—an experience that Cynthia has lovingly dedicated her life to sharing.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
