I can only be black like me, so I can’t be black like anybody else. I didn’t realize I’d only been black like me until I became an adult. For me, being black comes with all of its beauty, depth, history, and context, and I’ve always been acutely aware of that wherever I’ve been. The only difference in being black in Denver as opposed to being black anywhere to me is that I get to be black like me in the most beautiful place in the world.
