Celebrating Cicely Carr: A Beacon of Hope, Creativity, and Service

In the heart of our community is a vibrant soul whose mission is to empower the next generation through faith, creativity, and service—Cicely Carr. Nominated by an anonymous admirer, Cicely has dedicated her life to inspiring middle and high school students to find their voices and serve others. With her passion for teaching and mentoring, she has become a beacon of hope in the lives of many young people.

Cicely’s journey began in the church, where she was immersed in a routine that didn’t resonate with her personally. Upon entering college, she sought belonging above all else, which led her to new experiences that challenged her morals. It was through this exploration that she realized the importance of a strong foundation in faith. This understanding ignited her mission: to educate, encourage, and empower youth to grow in their faith while fostering a deep love for creativity and service.

Her brainchild, The Creative Wellness Project, blossomed out of creative workshops held in coffee shops and churches around the DFW. By studying the Bible and creating art, students are guided to explore their spiritual beliefs and discover their creative potential. Programs like S.H.I.N.E. (Sharing His Incredible News Everywhere) offer middle and high school students a platform to express their faith while engaging in meaningful service projects. Under Cicely’s guidance, these young ambassadors learn to blend their interests and talents in addressing social issues, cultivating confidence and compassion along the way.

Creativity is a central theme in Cicely’s approach. She believes, “Creativity has no rules,” emphasizing the importance of the process over perfection. In her workshops, students dive into various artistic mediums—collage, painting, photography—and discover the therapeutic power of self-expression. With every brushstroke or curl of newspaper, they learn more about themselves and their capability to effect change in the world.

Through her storytelling, Cicely shares valuable lessons about resilience. She recalls the challenges of starting The Creative Wellness Project, where many doors were shut in her face. Instead of viewing these rejections as failures, she learned to interpret them as redirection, leading her to paths she never anticipated. This powerful mindset encourages her students to redefine failure and embrace growth as an integral part of life.

As a dedicated educator for over 12 years, Cicely specializes in art, literacy, and entrepreneurship, believing that cultivating expression is essential in shaping young minds. From creating powerful posters to engaging in the art of storytelling through classes like The Hero’s Journey, she fosters an environment where students can thrive creatively and intellectually.

Beyond her work, Cicely is a proud fur mom to a Goldendoodle named, Canary. Together, they embody the joy of creativity and connection that Cicely hopes to inspire in everyone she encounters.

The community is fortunate to have Cicely Carr, whose unwavering commitment to nurturing the hearts and minds of youth leaves a lasting impact. Her passion for faith, art, and service is truly inspirational. Let’s celebrate Cicely—one of our own—who continues to make a difference, one creative soul at a time!

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
