Celebrating a Community Leader: The Inspiring Journey of a Trailblazer
Meet a remarkable individual who has made a significant impact in our local community and the oil industry—an inspiring leader, mentor, and advocate for continuous improvement. With a passion for helping others grow, this trailblazer, Christopher Parks, has dedicated their career to simplifying complex processes, thereby uplifting those around them. Their story is one of resilience, determination, and profound influence. From the very first day on the job, Christopher Parks made it their mission to create positive change. Embarking on a journey in an industry unfamiliar to them, they were motivated by the need to support their family. With a combination of technical skills and a relentless will to learn, they quickly became invaluable to their team. “Helping people grow beyond what they thought they could achieve is what I love most about my role,” they shared. This dedication to mentorship and leadership has set them apart in the workplace. One of the most pivotal lessons they passed on is the importance of continuous improvement. “No matter how good a process seems, you should always search for a safer, more efficient, or simpler way to get the task done,” they advised. This mentality has not only enhanced productivity in their organization but has also inspired many others in the community to adopt a similar outlook on growth. As a first and last black-exempt supervisor at ExxonMobil Offshore Santa Ynez Unit, Christopher Parks‘ achievements shine brightly against the backdrop of an industry that has often underrepresented diversity. Overcoming challenges related to racial perceptions in the workplace, they have skillfully navigated obstacles with resilience. Their proudest moments include mentoring colleagues to achieve their own promotions and guiding others in financial literacy, helping them secure a brighter future. With a strong belief in the power of empathy, they emphasize that listening and understanding others’ perspectives is crucial. “It’s important to listen and understand rather than just agreeing or disagreeing,” they said. This quality, coupled with confidence, being coachable, and a willingness to teach others without fear, creates an environment where everyone can thrive. Encouraging young people to step into the industry, Christopher Parks asserts, “Apply and don’t take no for an answer. If you don’t know something, seek help.” This spirit of persistence and community is the foundation they wish to build for future generations. In their eyes, the most impactful legacy involves teaching others to achieve financial independence, helping them serve their communities without the burden of financial struggle. Their mother’s steadfast reminder to “put God first” has remained a guiding principle throughout their journey and serves as a beacon of hope for those they mentor. As we celebrate this community leader, let their story serve as a beacon of inspiration for high school and middle school students. The path to personal and professional growth is illuminated by determination, mentorship, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. Remember, the choices you make today will empower your aspirations for tomorrow!

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
