Celebrating Chris Swann: The Maestro of Melody

At just a glance, Chris Swann is no ordinary musician. With a career that intertwines with iconic venues and memorable collaborations, Swann is a dynamic force in the music world that inspires creativity and passion in the community. Nominated by an anonymous community member, we celebrate his contributions not just as an artist but also as a role model for our younger generations. Known for his rhythmic mastery and eclectic style, Chris Swann has graced stages across the globe, playing in renowned venues from The Fillmore to The Orpheum Theatre. His musical journey, which began in Washington, D.C., was shaped by the vibrant beats of go-go music and the rock anthems of legends like Led Zeppelin and Rush. This diverse musical background allowed him to develop his unique sound, seamlessly navigating genres that range from folk to R&B, funk to punk, and everything in between. While he is best known for his collaborations with three-time world champion surfer, Tom Curren, Swann’s talents extend far past the music stage. His compositions have made powerful impacts on various media, including tracks that have been aired on ABC’s “20/20 News” and Disney productions. His melodic narratives resonate with audiences young and old, weaving stories that go beyond mere sound to create lasting impressions. Swann’s work has been featured in projects like Rip Curl’s surf documentary, “The Search,” and the captivating tennis documentary “A Date with Anna,” showcasing tennis star Anna Kournikova’s photo shoot in Mexico. These diverse experiences highlight not just his musical talent but also his ability to tell engaging stories through sound. Chris’s energy and enthusiasm for music don’t stop when the show ends. Away from the limelight and touring with the Tom Curren Band, he often collaborates with new artists and dives into different genres, like Egyptian Acid Rock. His dedication to pushing boundaries in music demonstrates his commitment to creativity and exploration, encouraging local youth to embrace their own passions. But perhaps what sets Swann apart is his genuine love for connecting with audiences. He’s shared stages with music legends like Jimmy Buffet, Switchfoot, and Jason Mraz—an experience that many aspiring musicians dream of. His story is not just one of success but of resilience and unwavering pursuit of artistic expression. As middle and high school students look for their own paths in music, art, and creativity, Chris Swann stands as a shining example of how hard work and passion can lead to a fulfilling and inspiring career. Whether you’re strumming a guitar or playing near a drum set, remember that music is a world where your story matters. Just like Chris, you can create melodies that resonate far beyond your community. Join us in celebrating Chris Swann—a local musical legend who proves that with talent and tenacity, you can leave an indelible mark on the world. Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
