Community Hero Spotlight: Cheryl Mayers
Cheryl moved to the Oceanside area in 2011 and found her spiritual home at New Venture Church, now Mariners Church. Originally raised in the Pentecostal faith, where she recalls a “fire and brimstone” upbringing, it was not until she started attending her local church in Oceanside that her faith journey truly began to take shape. Now, after more than a decade of faithful worship, Cheryl is an active leader within her church, serving on both the prayer team and guest services.
“Helping others is where I find my greatest satisfaction,” Cheryl shared in a recent conversation. This calling extends beyond her work within the church to her professional life as a physical therapist. Cheryl has dedicated her career to helping people regain their strength and independence. “Seeing a patient recover and take back control of their life is incredibly rewarding,” she said. It’s clear that Cheryl’s passion for healing—whether spiritual or physical—is at the core of her life.
Cheryl’s advice to young people? “Always do the best you can to help others,” she said without hesitation. It’s a motto she’s lived by, whether holding someone’s hand through a difficult rehabilitation process or offering words of encouragement to strangers visiting the church. For Cheryl, this purpose-driven life is anchored in her faith. She encourages young people to “keep your eyes fixed on Jesus,” especially in times of challenge.
One of Cheryl’s most cherished verses is Isaiah 40:31: “But those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” This verse played a pivotal role in her life during college and remains a cornerstone of her faith journey to this day.
When asked what kind of legacy she hopes to leave behind, Cheryl’s answer was simple, yet profound: “Live a life pleasing to God. Try to love like Jesus did.” In a world where people often seek out quick fixes to their problems, Cheryl emphasizes, “The world wants you to believe it can solve your problems, but the only one who truly can is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
For anyone wondering how they can make an impact, Cheryl stands as a shining example of someone who does good in both her profession and her faith. Whether she’s assisting a patient to walk again or praying for someone in pain, Cheryl is constantly working to make her community a better place—one small act at a time.
In Cheryl Mayers, Oceanside has a dedicated role model who shows us that strength and kindness flow from faith and a heart that strives to love like Jesus. May her story inspire many others to be a beacon of light wherever they go.
