Champion of Fatherhood: Charles Wilson’s Mission to Foster Family Engagement

Charles Wilson, the dedicated Head Start Preschool Coordinator at Neighborhood House Association, has devoted 14 years to empowering families. Serving a community of 10,000 families annually, his passion for nurturing paternal involvement shines brightly as he addresses a national crisis: approximately 18.3 million children in America living without a father figure.
Understanding the profound impact that fathers have on their children’s development and the wider community, Wilson has crafted a unique “Father Connection Recipe.” This initiative aims to strengthen fatherly engagement across various platforms including homes, schools, churches, and community spaces. He believes that the presence of a caring and involved father fundamentally enhances familial bonds and societal health.

“Every father’s involvement enriches our community, sparking endless possibilities for our youth.”

Why such a strong focus on fatherhood? Data from 2022 reveals a concerning trend where 1 in 4 American children grow up without a father’s presence, underlining a crucial need for advocacy and action. Wilson’s role extends beyond administration; he is a beacon of encouragement, actively leading seminars and workshops to educate and inspire fathers about the impactful role they can hold.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
