Celebrating Dr. Chanika Marsh: A Beacon of Hope for Students

This month, we shine the spotlight on an inspiring figure in our community, Dr. Chanika Marsh, who has been nominated by an anonymous community member for her outstanding contributions to local education. As the Umoja Counselor and Coordinator in our Counseling Office, Dr. Marsh has devoted her career to empowering students and enriching their educational experiences for over 15 years.

Dr. Marsh has journeyed through various roles in education, from Program Director to Counselor and Instructor, always championing cultural responsiveness and meaningful learning. As the first in her family to attend college, she faced challenges that would deter many, yet she remained undaunted. With sheer determination, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of California Riverside, a Master’s in School Counseling from the University of Redlands, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Argosy University.

Her commitment to nurturing the potential in students is evident in her impressive achievements. Notably, Dr. Marsh directed Wahupa Upward Bound for 13 years, guiding countless participants toward successful precollege performance and college degree completion. Recently, she has managed three grants totaling $1.1 million, ensuring compliance and supporting educational programs that directly impact student success.

Dr. Marsh’s philosophy of “working smart and playing hard” has helped her strike a delicate balance in life. She draws inspiration from Maya Angelou’s powerful words: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some humor, and some style.” This mantra reflects Dr. Marsh’s own journey, which she shares with her students in every counseling session. By turning her obstacles into lessons, she empowers her students to navigate their college paths with confidence and determination.

With a keen focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, Dr. Marsh has worked tirelessly to ensure all voices are represented within educational programs. In her role, she has been responsible for hiring, training, and managing over 20 staff members, while also ensuring that key objectives such as maintaining GPAs and guiding seniors into college are met.

For students seeking mentorship, Dr. Marsh has personalized education plans for caseloads of students, offering individualized tutoring to ensure they are college-ready. Her dedication to each student as an individual is what makes her an irreplaceable mentor within our community.

In her relentless pursuit to uplift the younger generation, Dr. Chanika Marsh embodies what it means to be an agent of change. Her infectious passion, coupled with her skills and experience, creates a solid foundation of success for our students. Let’s celebrate her incredible contributions and the profound impact she continues to make on the lives of so many!

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
