Shining the Spotlight: Meet Candice Miles, Inspiring Future Leaders

In our community, where inspiration and aspiration collide, one shining star is lighting the way for young leaders. Meet Candice Miles, a leadership coach dedicated to helping Black women master their leadership journeys with confidence and strength. With a heart full of empathy and a voice that motivates, Candice is committed to cheering others on as they step into their own leadership roles.Candice began her impactful journey just over a year ago, but her leadership experience spans more than a decade. Having worked in various corporate settings and startups, she faced challenges that sometimes made her feel like an imposter. However, instead of allowing those experiences to define her, she chose to rise above them. “I realized I was not alone in this journey, and that’s why I decided to help others like me,” she says.Throughout her career, Candice has developed essential skills in communication, empathy, and strategic thinking. “One of my greatest joys is being a real-life GPS for first-time leaders,” she explains. “I guide them through their journeys, helping them navigate the roadblocks while finding their unique paths.” Her approach is rooted in the belief that every challenge can be a stepping stone for growth, and she encourages her mentees to embrace their unique superpowers.“The best advice I’ve received is to be a tree, not a weed,” Candice shares, emphasizing the importance of creating a supportive environment for others. She aspires to be a source of shade and encouragement, fostering a community culture where everyone can thrive. Her motto reflects her commitment to uplifting others: “When you grow strong, you help others find their strength too.”Candice’s influence goes beyond mere coaching; she is building a tribe of empowered women. By encouraging her mentees to identify their strengths and adopt new technologies, like artificial intelligence, she equips them for success in a rapidly evolving world. “Surrounding yourself with a supportive squad is essential!” she insists. “We all need our tribe to push us forward.”Her journey has not been without obstacles, but they have shaped her into the compassionate leader she is today. Candice’s biggest source of inspiration comes from her grandfather, a principal who dedicated his life to empowering young people. “He taught me that lifting others up creates a lasting legacy,” she reflects.

As she continues to make her mark, Candice hopes to leave behind a powerful message: “It’s important to bridge the gap between who you are and who you want to be. Don’t be afraid to embrace your true self.” Her legacy will undoubtedly pave the way for future generations to rise, shine, and become the leaders they were meant to be.

In the words of Candice Miles, remember that your voice is powerful—let it be heard! Whether you’re in high school or just starting middle school, the journey of discovering your leadership potential starts with you. Embrace it, and help others do the same!

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
