Celebrating Dr. Bruce Hoskins: Community Educator and Advocate

Dr. Bruce C. Hoskins is currently on an educational sabbatical to spend more time with his children, focusing on family while continuing to inspire and serve the Oceanside community. This well-deserved break from his academic duties highlights his dedication to both his family and his students. In the heart of Oceanside, California, a beacon of hope and inspiration walks the halls of MiraCosta College. Dr. Bruce C. Hoskins, a passionate Professor of Sociology, is dedicated to not only educating his students but transforming the way they view the world around them. Nominated by an anonymous community member, Dr. Hoskins exemplifies the spirit of mentorship and the power of education, making him a standout figure in our community.

Bruce’s academic journey began at MiraCosta College, where he earned his Associate’s degree in Mathematics. Like many students, he initially didn’t recognize the opportunities available to him. “I didn’t know you could work full-time and go to college full-time,” he reflects. After a stint in the Navy, Bruce returned to MiraCosta, driven by the desire to inspire others just as he had been inspired. Nine years later, he returned as an instructor, fulfilling a dream he had cherished since his own studies.

Dr. Hoskins isn’t just an exceptional educator; he’s also a spoken word poet. With two albums to his name, he uses the art of poetry to connect with his students on a deeper emotional level. “I believe poetry can help students understand complex sociological issues like poverty, sexism, and racism,” he explains. By intertwining his poetic narratives with sociological concepts, he provides students with relatable context that brings learning to life.

In his classes, Bruce fosters an open and engaging atmosphere, urging students to share their thoughts and perspectives. “My job is to help them frame what they know using a sociological perspective,” he says. This approach not only empowers his students but also breaks down barriers, allowing them to feel like equal partners in the learning process. Students frequently comment that his classes are some of the most enjoyable and interesting they’ve attended, illustrating how effective his method really is.

Born and raised in Oceanside, Dr. Hoskins understands the challenges faced by many students in the community. Having grown up in a more difficult environment, he became determined to support the young people around him. “Teachers’ interactions with students can have lifelong impacts. I want to give them the encouragement I didn’t always have,” he emphasizes. Bruce’s empathy stems from his own experiences, motivating him to reach out to local high school students and offer them guidance.

Beyond his teaching, Dr. Hoskins actively participates in the community. He serves as an assistant coach for football at El Camino High School, helping young athletes channel their energy both on and off the field. His heart for service extends to writing a low-cost “Introduction to Sociology” textbook tailored for his students, available to them for free, showcasing his commitment to education and accessibility.

Now on a well-deserved educational sabbatical to spend more time with his children, Dr. Hoskins remains a pillar of support for the community. With four kids of his own, he embodies the values of family and dedication, sharing his faith as a born-again Christian and encouraging others to find their voices.

In celebrating Dr. Bruce Hoskins, we honor not only his achievements but also the lasting impact he has on students, families, and the broader Oceanside community. He is a true testament that one person can make a significant difference in the world around them.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
