“Briana is attending college at UCCS and majoring in Psychology. She has been serving on her mother’s, Lisa Jenkin, nonprofit board for a few years now, and has been a staff member at Kingdom Builders Family Life Center for over a year. She knows what she wants and is doing the work to get to where she wants to be as a therapist.

Working with families dealing with domestic violence isn’t easy, yet here she is putting in the amazing work that she does! She has been essential as the main administrative person with KBFLC, but I am excited to see her move more into the field she is interested in as a Program Advocate in the new year! Plus, she will be starting off as our Safehouse House Manager in 2021.

Juggling school, working a full time job, and helping with her big family, she is an amazing young woman. I have only known her for a short time; however, in that time, I have grown to admire her and where she is going in life. I know she can better tell her story and all that she has accomplished so far!”

My Black Colorado Interview

What school do you attend and what year are you.

I am currently a junior at the University of Colorado at Colorado springs I am a dual major in Psychology and sociology.

What do you think others would say that they like the most about you?

I believe others would say that I’m understanding regarding others’ life situations. I would say that they like that because I am a very dependable person and when it comes to people I love, I will drop everything. My friends and family see me as understanding and whenever they need advice or a listening ear, I am here with no judgment.

When you are not in a class, what are the things you enjoy being involved with?

When I am not in class or at work I enjoy being at home. I have such a busy schedule between being a full-time student and working 40 hours a week, but when I get the downtime, I catch up on my favorite Tv shows and or reading books.

what is the best advice someone has given you recently?

Slow down. My aunt gave me that advice, It applies to my life because I have a million things going at once and I must slow down so I don’t burn out.

What do you think is one piece of advice that you think adults need to hear, to help them connect with the younger generation better.

I think one piece of advice that the older generation needs to hear to connect with the younger generation is “ Allow us to grow in our differences”. When I am talking to the older generation I feel chastised about my differences from them rather than them accepting me being different. I will do things differently from them because I am from a different time.

What accomplishments or awards are you most proud of?

I would say my schooling although I am not done the simple fact that I’m almost done is exciting. I dropped out of college three times and changed my degree twice, but two years ago I didn’t even think I would finish college. But with me sitting here being three semesters away from graduation. I am so proud of myself and how far I have come.

What impact have you made in the community that you are most proud of?

My everyday work within the community includes working at a small nonprofit that assists survivors of domestic violence and at-risk youth as a case manager.

What do you think you want to do for a career and why?

I want to be a therapist who specializes in trauma and substance abuse.

how has your family helped you?

My parents have pushed me in every dream I had for myself, but they never let me give up on myself as they would never give up on me. My parents are one of my biggest supporters.
