Celebrating Barbara T. Heath: A Beacon of Service in Our Community

In our bustling local community, there is a shining star who has devoted her life to making a positive impact: Barbara T. Heath. With her infectious passion and unwavering dedication, Barbara has become a pivotal figure in our area, inspiring countless individuals, especially the younger generation, to step up and serve others. Barbara identifies with the pronouns she/her/hers and believes that everyone has a unique voice and perspective to share. Her journey towards impacting her community began years ago, as she recognized the need for more support and engagement among the youth. Since then, she has taken on numerous roles, including mentor, volunteer coordinator, and community advocate, bridging the gap between generations. When asked what skills have helped her in her quest for community service, Barbara emphasized communication, empathy, and resilience. These are the qualities she believes can empower anyone to excel in their pursuits. She says, “The ability to truly listen to others and understand their perspectives is what fosters genuine connections.” Her encouragement to high schoolers and middle schoolers is to nurture these skills early on, as they will not only enhance their performance in life but create a ripple effect in the community. Barbara got involved with her community through volunteering at a local shelter, where her passion for service ignited. She discovered that helping others brought her immense joy and fulfillment. “What I love most about my role is witnessing the change we can enact when we come together,” she shares. Through organizing food drives, leading youth workshops, and advocating for social causes, she has made a lasting impact. Reflecting on the best advice she received, Barbara highlights the importance of being of service: “Make God an integral part of your life, and always look for ways to uplift those around you.” She believes this foundation fosters a sense of purpose in each individual, lighting a path for the future. The top three things that she feels help anyone excel in community settings are being proactive, being open to learning, and collaborating with others. Barbara strongly encourages those looking to become more connected to step outside their comfort zones, join local groups, and never hesitate to reach out for mentorship. Though Barbara faced challenges along her journey—like overcoming self-doubt and balancing her commitments—she views these obstacles as growth opportunities that shape resilience. “Embrace those tough moments; they will help you grow,” she advises. As for what she hopes to achieve, Barbara wishes to inspire a legacy of service. “I want to encourage others to find their calling and give back,” she emphasizes. Her inspiration came from a high school teacher who consistently believed in her potential, paving the way for her own voice to flourish. To the younger generation, Barbara shares, “You have so much to offer! No matter your age, remember that your actions can create change.” With her words and actions, she embodies a spirit of hope and encourages us all to rise to the occasion and be the champions of our community.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
