In our community, there are individuals whose passion and commitment to their faith resonate deeply with those around them. One such person is Ann Givens, a dynamic Worship Leader and Minister of God’s Word who has been impacting lives for over 30 years. Ann serves as an inspiring example to both middle and high school students who seek to make a difference in their communities.

From a young age, Ann has dedicated her life to serving in the church, finding her calling in worship and ministry. Her voice, described as her instrument of praise, uplifts hearts and encourages spiritual connection. Ann emphasizes that the essence of her role lies not just in music but in discipleship—leading people to Jesus through her faith and actions.

“What I love most about my role is the opportunity to disciple people to Jesus,” she shares. It’s not merely about leading songs; it’s about fostering a deeper understanding of God’s love and grace. Ann crafts her messages thoughtfully, pulling from her own life experiences and challenges. She firmly believes that humility, love for others, and giving grace are paramount to excelling in ministry.

“Stay humble! Love God’s people and show grace towards people,” she advises young aspiring leaders. Ann has faced obstacles throughout her journey, acknowledging that offenses will come but encouraging others to let go of grudges. “Don’t hold on to them,” she states. This wisdom is invaluable to students navigating their own challenges and relationships.

As a Women Conference Speaker, Ann shares her insights with larger audiences, constantly reminding them to keep Jesus at the center of all endeavors. One of her core messages is that loving God and surrendering to Him opens doors to countless possibilities. “Find Jesus and remain there!” she urges the younger generation, emphasizing the importance of grounding oneself in faith.

Her personal accomplishments mirror her unyielding commitment to her beliefs. Ann takes pride in being recognized as a lover of Christ, stating that receiving compliments about her devotion to God reaffirms her purpose in life. She dreams of leaving a legacy that inspires love for Jesus and trust in His plan. “Falling in love with Jesus was and is the best thing you can ever do,” she asserts, igniting passion in young hearts for a life rooted in faith.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
