Known for her vibrant personality and diverse talents, Amber is a force of creativity, always leaving her mark wherever she goes. For Amber, beauty goes beyond the surface; it’s about how a person feels inside. As she once said, “My role isn’t only to do one’s hair and makeup but to transition how they feel about themselves.” With talents ranging from hairstyling to painting, Amber’s journey is nothing short of inspiring.Amber began her career in the beauty industry, stepping in as a model before being enchanted by the world of hairstyling and makeup. She was mentored by an exceptional hairstylist, Marcus, who took her under his wing, changing the course of her life. “I was inspired by the glamorous energy surrounding hair shows and photoshoots,” Amber recalls. This initial spark ignited a passion that allowed her to connect deeply with her clients, making them feel heard and beautiful. What sets Amber apart is her incredible ability to adapt. Her skills as a “chameleon” allow her to meet the unique needs of each of her clients, creating an atmosphere of warmth and empathy. Amber believes that every client should leave feeling better than when they arrived. “They stand a little taller, feel a little sexier,” she smiles. This sentiment illustrates her commitment to not just creating beauty but uplifting spirits. The pandemic brought many challenges to her industry, forcing a period of reflection and adaptation. Rather than being deterred, Amber discovered a new passion for painting, turning adversity into opportunity. Her artistic proficiency was recognized when she received a “Certificate of Artistic Achievement” from the prestigious Luxembourg Art Prize in 2022—a milestone that solidified her status as an artist on an international stage.

For Amber, mentoring the next generation is incredibly important. She encourages young dreamers to cultivate resilience, maintain a positive attitude, and continue learning. “Whatever distress you’re facing now is only temporary. Believe in yourself and be aware of your thoughts and feelings,” she advises. Amber’s hope is for future generations to realize that it’s never too late to start something new and to adopt a ‘never give up’ attitude.

When asked about her legacy, she reflects on the impact she hopes to create. Amber wants to remind others that anything is possible and that they can rise again, even after falling. “I want my kids and young ones watching me to see that you can achieve your dreams, regardless of your circumstances,” she asserts.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
