I am Abner Genesee and am a local actor, director, teacher, artist, father, Storyteller here in the Denver area. I am a member of Actors Equity Association. I’m also a member of sag-aftra. Those are both industry unions, trade unions. I also serve as a board member of The Colorado theater Guild. I tell stories at different theaters here in the Colorado area. I started out doing that in New York, that’s where I got my training. So I started there moved over to the West Coast during the 90s and now I make my home here in Denver, Colorado.
What motivated you to get into the theater industry?
for me it’s all about connecting and storytelling and particularly representation. I’m of Haitian descent. Both of my parents are from Haiti , I’m seeking to expand the understanding for our culture and for and particularly reaching out to younger folks that they can see themselves in these roles as well.
What have you been excited about currently in your career?
I’m excited about basically seeing more people who look like me in the audience and I’m excited to see expanding more culturally diverse coming to the shows and seeing themselves represented up there on stage.
What Advice would you give your younger self?
Do not to get distracted. keep doing what you’re doing. stay faithful to what you’re doing. keep true to yourself and keep true to what you’re trying to do. It will be much more satisfying and rewarding along the way. pay attention to those coming behind you, you’re being observed even when you don’t think you are. And to reach back as often as you can.
What would you tell people are trying to advance their career in theater,
Stay in motion. Don’t concentrate on being who you think others want you to be. Be your you own self, that’s what makes you unique. Bring you to your role. Bring you to your character. Bring you to your your play writing. Don’t try to form into what you think is popular or what you think : will be more accepted. People will gravitate towards you because it’s Unique, it’s authentic.
